Old age security pension (OAS) 2025 is a monthly benefit that replaces candidate’s income of the people of 65 years age or above. In general, the candidate is automatically enrolled for OAS pension plan, if adequate information is available to the authorities. Candidates will be notified in case of their enrollment in this plan. You might need to apply for the OAS pension if, in the month following your 64th birthday, you did not get any notification on it. In this page you will be able to check OAS payment dates.
OAS Payment & Qualification Requirement
Eligibility for OAS pension plan does not require working status or working history of candidate. If the candidate was never employed or is employed still, he/she can receive OAS pension. If the candidate is resident in Canada, following must be fulfilled:
- Candidate must be 65 years old or older.
- Candidate must be a citizen or lawful resident of Canada at the time your application for an OAS pension is approved.
- Candidate inhabited Canada for at least 10 years since the age of 18.
People Outside Canada
If the candidate is living outside Canada, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
- Candidate must be 65 years of age or older.
- On the day before leaving Canada, the candidate had to be a citizen or a lawful resident of Canada.
- Candidate must have resided in Canada for at least 20 years since the age of 18.
Canadians Working Overseas
Time duration of working abroad of Canadians who are overseas and working for Canadian Employers such as the candidates in Canadian Armed Forces and banks may be counted as residence in Canada. Qualification requirement for this scenario is either one of the following:
- After ending employment candidate must have returned to Canada within 6 months.
- If the candidate is still employed but turns 65, then he/she must have kept residency in Canada, while working overseas.
Documents Required For OAS
Candidate must provide the following documents to apply for this pension plan:
- Evidence of employment provided by the employer.
- Evidence of your actual return to Canada (unless you turned 65 while working outside of the country).
Other Relatives
Spouses, common-law partners, dependents, and Canadians employed by international organizations overseas may also count their time spent overseas as residence in Canada under specific circumstances.
Different Scenario
If candidate does not fit in any one of the above scenarios, still he/she may apply for OAS pension plan if he/she has either one of the following:
- Candidate inhabited one of those countries Canada has established a social security agreement.
- Candidate must be a contributor of social security system of one of the countries with Social Security established with Canada.
Other Benefits
You and/or your spouse/common-law partner may be eligible for additional benefits and payments on top of your Old Age Security pension.
Maximum Amount of Payment
Candidates that have age between 65 and 74, must have annual net world income less than $148,451 to receive OAS and may get $727.67 as maximum monthly payment amount. And candidates that are age 75 and above, must have annual net world income less than $154,196 to receive OAS and may get $800.44 as maximum monthly payment amount.
Consumer Price Index
Every January, April, July, and October, the Old Age Security pension is reviewed to account for increases in the Consumer Price Index-measured cost of living. The amount of your monthly payment won’t go down if living expenses decline.
Increased Old Age Security
You will automatically receive a 10% increase in your Old Age Security pension beginning in July 2022 if you are or will be 75 years of age or older in June 2022. The 10% increase in the maximum OAS pension rate will not affect the calculation of your Guaranteed Income Supplement.
Candidate’s Payment
If the income of candidate is higher than $90,997 (2023), he/ she will have to return part or entire Old Age Security pension. Payments can directly be deposited into candidate’s bank account in Canada, United States or some other countries or by cheque.
Retroactive payments
Candidate might receive retroactive payments if he/she is already 65 for a maximum of 11 months from the date we receive his/her application. The candidate will be ineligible to receive retroactive payments during the deferral period if he/she postponed receiving Old Age Security pension.

Wait to Start OAS
Candidate can either get first OAS after one month he/she turns 65 or can delay first income to get higher amount. If a candidate chooses to delay OAS for up to 60 months (5 years) after the age of 65, he/she will get larger payment. The more you delay, the larger payment you get.
After Age 70
But be aware that if you are delaying your Old Age Security after turning age 70, there is no benefit, in fact you may have risk of losing the funds. Candidates over the age 70, not receiving OAS must apply for OAS. There is also no use of delaying first payment if candidate is eligible for Guaranteed Income Supplement.
Personal Circumstances
Please keep in mind your personal circumstances like health, financial situation and retirement plans while deciding when to start receiving Old Age Security.
Income More than $90,997
If the candidate is still employed and receiving income higher than $90,997(2023), he must return part of his/her Old Age Security pension payment. In this case delaying first payment is not helpful.
Partial Old Age Security
Candidate can receive partial OAS if he/she is not eligible to receive full OAS but he/she must have inhabited Canada for at least 10 years after age 18. The Partial OAS amount depends on years lived in Canada.

Applying Procedure OAS Payment and Dates
To complete the application for this plan, the following procedures must be followed.
- Determine Need
When candidate receive letter from OAS authority about getting Old Age Security pension, the candidate must apply for OAS payment dates if:
- Candidate gets letter from authority suggesting applying.
- Incorrect information is printed in the letter.
If the candidate does not receive any letter from authority after turning 64, he/she must contact the OAS payment authority.
- Starting Time
Candidate must choose starting time for receiving pension whether at age 65 or at any specific date depending on best time for him/her.
- Online Procedure to Apply
Candidate can apply online if he/she fulfills following requirements:
- Candidate must be 1 month past his/her 64th birthday.
- Candidate must not already receiving OAS payments.
- Candidate must not already applied for OAS application.
- Candidate must be living inside Canada.
- He/She must not have an authorized third party on his/her account.
MSCA Account
Candidate can apply online through My Service Canada Account. If he/she does mot have MSCA account, he/she must register for MSCA account.
Paper Application
If candidate is applying through paper application, he must:
- Print and fill out the Application for the OAS payment dates and the GIS (ISP-3550) paper form.
- Add certified true copies of the required documents.
- Apply by mail or bring the application in person to a Service Canada location.
- Response from Authority
OAS authority will mail letter with a decision about the application of the candidate or will request for more information.
Decision Letter
Letter from the authority will consist of:
- The amount candidate will receive per month.
- The date of receiving first payment.
- Any past payments owed to the candidate.
- Review Application
Candidate can review his/her application status by either signing in to his/her MSCA account or by contacting Service Canada.
- Disagreement with Decision
In case of disagreement with the decision of pension plan, candidate must request the review in writing within 90 days of receiving decision letter. Request for reconsideration can also be submitted, but it can take several months to complete depending upon the case.
First Payment
Candidate will receive OAS payment on either the month after turning 65 or the specific date chosen by him/her.
Taxable Income
Old Age Security payments are taxable, but taxes are not deducted automatically without notifying the plan holder. Candidate can ask to deduct federal income tax from income by signing in to MSCA account or by mailing completed request for voluntary federal income tax deductions form to Service Canada.
T4 and NR4 Tax Slips
You will receive a T4 or NR4 tax slip early each year that details the amount you received the year before. This slip must be submitted with your annual income tax return, either in person or by mail. Residents of Canada receive T4 tax information slips, whereas individuals residing outside of Canada receive NR4 tax information slips.
Situation Changes
If candidate’s personal information or marital status changes such as address or phone number changed, get married, entered common-law union, get divorced or separated, spouse or common-law partner dies, a beneficiary dies.
Cancel Payment
If you wish to cease or postpone making Old Age Security payments, you can request a cancellation or postponement of your first Old Age Security payment if you have been receiving it for less than six months. Within six months of receiving your first payment, write to us.
